Hang Up Is Back!

Hang Up Is Back!
Hang Up, A Reality Dating Show

Last week I talked about an audiodrama I love. Today, I want to talk about another series, a reality dating show called Hang Up.

The premise is similar to some of the dating shows of the 80's and 90's, with the dates taking place off-screen. The star and their dates don't see each other or know their real names until the end, and there's a potential to go on a vacation or take the cash money prize.

One big difference, I suppose, is that the show is def more queer friendly. I believe I first heard about it from the Gender Reveal podcast, for what it's worth. I was never big on dating shows because most of them were obviously made for cishet people (unlike me), but I do remember being heavily invested in A Shot of Love With Tila Tequila.

Anyway, I was super curious about this show because of how the dates were structured. A seven minute speed date (or dial) didn't sound feasible to me. I mean, how well can you get to know someone in such short spurts?

The show proved me wrong fast, leading to me binging most of it in the period of a week or so. I was rooting for a few people by the very end, and was elated with the pick. I don't want to say too much and give anything away for those who haven't listened, but I gushed about the show to my girlfriend, who found it equally amusing. And the habit of one contestant being...gross. He was a dentist who chewed gum while working on the teeth of his patients.

Nasty!!

But the show is finally, with season two!! As eager as I am to get back into it, I want to wait a bit for more episodes to release. I'll give it at least a week or two before jumping back in, but the wait is so agonizing! Reminds me too much of my childhood, where we didn't have all these streaming services.

At the same time, I like being drip fed content. It gives me something to look forward to and form theories with other fans.
